Indecision: The Dream Killer

Dreams can act as guiding lights, illuminating our path, and inspiring people to strive for greatness, fulfillment, and purpose. But there is something that often goes unnoticed yet holds the power to shatter your dreams into fragments of what could have been: indecision.

Many people have a hard time making decisions in their lives—no matter how big or small—and it prevents them from achieving what they desire in life. Indecision is the inability to make a choice. While it might seem harmless, its long-term effects can be devastating. Indecision creeps into various aspects of life, from career choices to personal relationships, and even daily routines. When individuals are unable to make decisions, they remain stagnant, unable to move forward towards their goals and aspirations.

All of this ultimately affects your abundance and what you are energetically calling into your life. If you have a hard time making decisions, it can be because you’re not clear on what you want. When you’re not clear on what you want, you don’t know what action to take to move your life forward—and the Universe doesn’t know what to bring to you.

Tiny Choices Drain Your Energy and Block Your Path to Clarity

People often think that not being able to make big decisions have the biggest impact, but that’s not true. It’s the multitude of small, seemingly insignificant choices that subtly and steadily drain your energy, leaving you paralyzed and unable to tackle the bigger, more important decisions that shape your future. Failing to make decisions about even the smallest thing in life not only consumes valuable mental resources but also creates a cluttered mind that hinders clarity and progress.

It may not seem like these tiny choices make much a difference, but they take up space in your mind and body, even when you’re not consciously thinking about them. This is something that comes up regularly with clients I work with. This affects everyone, even those that consider themselves to be quick decision-makers. It can be trickier for those people to recognize this because if they are telling themselves they always make quick decisions, they miss out on noticing the times when they are not.

Think of the smallest decisions as taking up a physical space in your body, even when you’re not consciously thinking about them. The more outstanding decisions you have, the more space they take up. When you can free up that space (and energy), it will make you feel so much lighter, as if boulders were physically removed from your body.

One question I ask clients when indecision comes up in our work is: “Would you go to a restaurant and tell the server to bring you whatever he/she wants to bring you from the menu?” Most people answer “no.” The reason is because you risk getting something you don’t want. You can simply ask for the exact thing you want, and the server will bring it to you. This is how the Universe works, too. You need to know what you want so the Universe knows what to bring you.  Keep in mind, it might not be the exact thing you asked for but will often be something better. If you don’t know what you want, you get what you get.

Indecision Takes a Psychological Toll

Indecision may stem from a fear of making the wrong choice, leading to anxiety and stress. The constant weighing of options without a definitive conclusion creates a mental burden that can be exhausting. This mental fatigue further reduces the ability to make decisions, creating a vicious cycle of inaction and regret. When indecision reigns, dreams suffer. Here’s how indecision can cripple your ambitions and prevent you from achieving what you truly want in life.

Opportunities are often fleeting, presenting themselves for a moment before disappearing. When indecision takes hold, these opportunities pass by unseized. Whether it’s a job offer, a chance to move to a new city, or a moment to invest in a promising venture, hesitation can mean the difference between success and missed potential.

Without decisive steps, there is no forward movement. Indecision leads to a state of stagnation where time passes but nothing changes. Dreams require nurturing and consistent effort, but indecision keeps one stuck in a limbo of “what ifs” and “maybes,” preventing any meaningful progress.

The inability to make decisions can erode self-confidence. Each moment of indecision is a moment of self-doubt, reinforcing the belief that one is incapable of making the right choices. This lack of confidence can spill over into other areas of life, diminishing overall self-esteem and the belief in one’s ability to achieve their dreams.

Strategies to Overcome Indecision

While indecision can be daunting, it is not insurmountable. It’s important to be in tune with how you best make decisions, so that you can make them more quickly without so much back and forth about what the right choice is. Everyone is different, and how you best make decisions may be very different from how others in your life do. I encourage you to find out what your best strategy is, so that indecision is not keeping you from living your dreams.

I’m not suggesting that you make decisions just for the sake of making decisions. I am suggesting that you become more aware of the outstanding decisions you have in your life that need to be made, so that you can either move on them or set them aside for decision to be made at a future time.

One thing I suggest for everyone is to learn about your Human Design and how you are designed to make decisions. I’m not a Human Design practitioner, but I have learned enough about it to know how accurate it is in helping people understand themselves better and how to they can move more easily through life.

Here are some effective techniques to prevent decisions from draining your energy and clouding your clarity, so you can streamline the decision-making process:

1. Set clear goals: when you know what you want to achieve, it becomes easier to make decisions that align with your objectives.

2. Embrace imperfection: embrace the idea that deciding, even if it turns out to be imperfect, is better than making no decision at all.

3. Limit options: the paradox of choice suggests that having too many options can lead to decision paralysis. Focus on the most viable choices and disregard the rest.

4. Set deadlines: deadlines create a sense of urgency and force you to decide within a specific timeframe.

5. Trust your instincts: your intuition is a powerful guide. If you find yourself torn between options, take a moment to listen to your body and how you feel when thinking about the different options.

6. Seek advice if needed: ask for help if needed, but the final decision should be yours, as you are the one who must live with the consequences.

7. Delegate when possible: delegate smaller, less important decisions to others whenever you can.

8. Reflect on past decisions: use these insights to inform your current decision-making process and to build confidence in your ability to choose wisely.

9. Create routines: establishing routines for everyday activities can significantly reduce the number of decisions you need to make.

10. Make a list of all the decisions that need to be made. Go through each and assign it a number between 1 and 10, rating it on how close you are to being able to make that decision. If you are at a 6 or less for any of them, you are not close to making the decision and should consider setting it aside until a later point in time. Don’t let it take up space in your mind and body. If something is a 7 or greater, what do you need to do to make it a 10 and move forward? Then do it and act. Do this regularly so you are always on top of all the outstanding decisions that need to be made.

11. Take action: each decision made and acted upon reinforces the habit of decisiveness, making it easier to tackle larger, more significant choices.

Conclusion

By implementing these strategies, you can minimize the energy drain caused by decisions and maintain a clearer, more focused mind. This clarity allows you to better assess your goals, weigh your options, and make thoughtful decisions about your future. Instead of being bogged down by a multitude of minor choices, you can direct your cognitive resources towards the decisions that truly matter.

Your dreams are worth the effort. Don’t let indecision hold you back. Start making choices today, and watch your dreams transform into reality.
